Algiers is one of the oldest neighborhoods of New Orleans, first established in 1718 as the only part of New Orleans on the West bank side of the River.
Algiers Point is a protected historical neighborhood and many families have lived in this area for generations. This beautiful area sits neatly at the point where the river bends before heading south toward the Gulf. Living in Algiers allows for the feel of small town life with the major metro area just a quick ferry ride across the river. |
Similar to the 7th Ward, Algiers culture has deep connection to the Mardi Gras Indian culture, so much so, that the local high school principal has been masking** for over 50 years, and local elementary school, Martin Behrman, sometimes teaches kids how to create their own costumes.

Featured to the right, it might not look like much, but I promise you will fall in love with River Fine Food Store in Algiers. Their poboys are among the best!
But Algiers has also been blessed with many great international options, such as Rio Grande Tacos, Umi 2 Sushi & Hibachi and Olive Branch Cafe. For local flavors, stop by Seafood Zone or the Dry Dock Cafe. For coffee-lovers, Toute de Suite is a great cafe. |
